Khan was raised Catholic. She was educated at her school, the Hyde Park Saint Thomas the Apostle Church Elementary School. Khan discovered a love for Blues and rhythm when she was young teenagers. Her first girl group, called the Crystalettes when she was eleven years old, along and Taka. Khan became a part of The Black Panther Party in 1967 after becoming close to Chicago-born activist Fred Hampton, a member of the Black Panther Party. A lot of people believe that she earned the moniker Chaka in the Panthers however she claims it was Yoruba Baba who gave her the name when she was thirteen when she joined the party for the first time.
